#1 Park in Mylapore
Originally known as Arathakuttai, Nageswara Rao Park was a sizable pond. In response to a request from the Chennai Corporation, the proprietors of the pond, namely Ramayamma Pantulu, Aravamutha Iyengar, and Nainiappa Mudaliar, generously donated it to the civic body for the purpose of establishing a park. Following its establishment, the park was christened in honor of Desodharaka Nageswara Rao Pantulu. Its inauguration to the public was officiated by P. S. Kumaraswamy Raja, the then Chief Minister of Madras, on the 20th of October, 1940.
Initially, the park occupied a smaller area along Luz
Church Road. It underwent expansion when additional land
was contributed by Ramayee Ammal, M. Nainappa Mudaliyar,
V. Kumaraswamy Raja, Vinjamur Govindarajachari, and
Aravamadhu Iyengar in the same year. In 1996, the
Chennai Corporation spearheaded a redevelopment project
for the park and took over its maintenance. A pond known
as Aaratha kuttai was transformed into a garden,
enriching the park's features. It was Nageswara Rao, the
founder of the neighboring Amrutanjan factory, who
persuaded local residents to enhance the area when the
pond faced the threat of drying up. In his honor, the
park was dedicated to him.
Nageswara Rao Park encompasses an area of 4 acres (1.6 hectares) and is situated at Luz Corner in Mylapore, Chennai, India. Besides providing a designated play area for children, the park is accessible to the public from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. It is a favored destination for morning strolls within the community. The park also serves as a venue for musical kutcheris and civic forums throughout the year on weekends. Additionally, a badminton court is available for enthusiasts. Sundaram Finance undertakes the responsibility of maintaining this cherished park.
